Various/Project Blowed – 10th Anniversary (Project Blowed/Decon) DVD

 DVD

Various/Project Blowed – 10th Anniversary (Project Blowed/Decon)

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t expect to like this CD, what with last years Good Brothers compilation being downright terrible. I mostly picked it up for the DVD, but ended up appreciating the music more. Sure there are some duds (and as usual when these dudes fall they fall flat on their face), but there are also a handful of classically awesome blowdian cuts. Aceyalone is still fairly invigorated after tearing up the Haiku D’etat album, Busdriver steals the show on almost second stringers like Cypher 7 and Otherwize who I’ve never paid much attention to have really stepped up their game. Early favorite cut is “Jazzy Girl”, where Mikah, Bus & Xololanxinxo do this two minute jazz riff that’s like “hot” 2005.

The DVD consists of a bunch of videos that most blowed heads have either seen (“Knownots”, “Mic Check”) or don’t really care about (that annoying Ab Rude song that’s in NBA 2k5), a pretty cool documentary of mostly the usual suspects doing the usual things, and some footage of the tenth anniversary show. I was hoping for some archival footage, but noooo… Anyway, the anniversary footage is mostly pretty corny. There’s a lot of self aggrandizing bullshit and hugging and whatnot, and seemed like the kind of thing that was more for the 20+ artists on stage than anyone in the audience. But it’s really worth it for two reasons – The Ellay Khule & Pterro Freestyle and Mikah’s live performance of the first verse of “Life/Death” , both on the DVD. Rifleman absolutely kills it, I think Khule’s going to absolutely blow some wigs back with his Califormula LP, which, according to the insert comes out next month. And Mikah’s, well Mikah. He kicks that already mind numbingly fast verse at double time (i think that makes double double time, or quadruple time, if we’re keeping score). via  http://www.cocaineblunts.com/blog/blog.html

conscious hiphop

DJ Format/Abdominal

conscious hiphop

DJ Format has the remarkable talent of channeling the sound of laidback, funky hiphop, a feat all the more impressive since he’s an awkard white guy from the south of England. Abdominal is an MC from Montreal who’s as lyrically silly as DAISY age hiphop at its finest. Together, they blow my mind. ‘Ill Culinary Behaviour’ is irresistable, and ‘The Hit Song’ does just what it says on the box: hits the spot, every time.
Old-school hiphop from the old-school continent

Deep Thinkers

innovative underground hiphop

I love my public library. I used to go weekly to borrow 18 CDs of random stuff I’d never heard. Sometime in 2000, I picked up a Best of Bellydance album to check out. To my ear’s surprise, Track 2 (Hossam Ramzy – Khusara Khusara) was the original song sampled for the number 1 single at the time, Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin” (and now it’s used again in M.I.A.’s “Bingo”). Now if bellydance can work in hiphop, Deep Thinkers prove gypsy can as well in “Kiss the Sky”, albeit cut up in a deconstructed style alongside vocals from Wu-Tang and Busta. The Thinkers keep it creative in “Interruption with Substance” using a choice sample from Four Tet’s old folktronica group, Fridge.
A new imaginative, passionate, and conscious force in hiphop.

MF Doom

MF Doom / King Gedorah
Doom?s career in hip hop goes right back to the early 90s when, known as Zev Love X, he was a central member of nu skool phenomenons KMD. Dropped by Elektra for refusing to change ?controversial? cover artwork, tragedy was heaped on top of disappointment when Zev Love?s brother and fellow band member, Subroc, was killed in a car accident. The young MC and producer vanished from the hip hop scene and was, to some extent, forgotten. In 1998, though, he re-emerged on Bobbito Garcia?s classic label Fondle ?Em as MF Doom and over the next few years cemented his place as one of the most important names on the underground scene, “Operation: Doomsday” was hailed as a classic and KMD?s ?lost? album, “Black Bastards” finally saw the light of day. A generation of musicians have grown up in awe of him and he has since worked with everyone from Prefuse 73 to Madlib. Read more It’s also possible, to listen to the whole album, just follow the link before.
